Judie
Schwartz and Evelinda Urman
are the creators of the popular column “Style Matters,”
which appears weekly in the Rocky Mountain News. The column is available
nationwide to more than 400 papers on the Scripps Howard News Service.
Aimed at women readers with an interest in fashion, shopping and
beauty, the column recently celebrated its sixth year anniversary.
They are also the authors of the Colorado best-seller, “A
Fashion-Lover’s Guide to the Best Shopping in Denver and Beyond,”
available at all major bookstores.
The two first met at a Cher concert at Coors (Fiddler’s Green)
Amphitheatre near Denver. Schwartz was the public relations director,
and Urman was the national program manager for Coors Brewery. She
and her marketing team were pitching Cher’s endorsement of
the Coors Literacy Project. “We realized we were each wearing
an outfit the other coveted,” Schwartz said. “We instantly
bonded.” The enthusiastic fashionistas have been buddies ever
since. The column originated from their frequent shopping expeditions.
Urman and Schwartz are popular radio and television personalities
and present seminars on fashion and professional business image.
They have worked in a variety of office environments from buttoned-downed
companies to free-wheeling rock concert venues. When they first
entered the workforce, John Molloy’s Dress for Success “uniform”
had invaded the office place; when they left they were witnesses
to the advent of “Casual Fridays.”
Originally from New York, Schwartz moved to Denver in 1982. She
has been in public relations for 19 years, four of them as public
relations director for a Universal Concerts amphitheater in Denver.
She has worked with several Denver political consulting firms for
clients such as Continental Airlines, Southern Pacific Railroads,
American Express, Colorado Tourism Board, Motorola and Ticketmaster-Colorado.
Born in Venezuela, Urman moved to Denver in 1979. She has worked
in sales, marketing and advertising for 17 years at Stockton-West
Burkhard, J. Walter Thompson, and the Howard Group, handling clients
such as Wendy’s International, TCI Cable and Ford Motor Company
before going to Coors Brewing Company where she was in charge of
the Coors Light brand.
Together Urman and Schwartz have two husbands, six children, no
pets and small closets.
